The series consists of college files of the Southern Student Human Relations Project of the United States National Student Association from 1960-1968. The files include primarily correspondence with southern college groups pertaining to local seminars and the integration of southern campuses, particularly the University of Mississippi (1962). The series also contains publications, reports, and correspondence from southern human relations councils.

The United States National Student Association (USNSA) was founded in 1947 to assist students in their quest for education regardless of race, sex, and religious or political beliefs. In 1958, USNSA held the first of its Southern Student Human Relations Seminars (SSHRS) directed by Ray Farabee. By 1959, the USNSA created the Southern Student Human Relations Project funded by the Marshall Field Foundation and responsible for the annual SSHRS as well as other human relations workshops.
